Scoff mixture: York Food & Drink Festival in six courses | York Mix

Doing the dishes? one of the chefs at the York Food & Drink Festival

Hungry? Good. Because York is groaning under the weight of grub as the food and drink festival hits town.

Every kind of taste, texture and flavour is on offer from Thursday, September 21 until September 30. Top chefs will be chopping, drizzling and blanching their way through a raft of recipes.

There are likely to be enough helpings for everyone. Here are six portions of festival foodie fabulousness to get you salivating?

?

First course: Soup

Plot to Plate: York Edible Schools (YES) Day

York Edible Schools is a network of schools being supported to ensure that their noble veg-growing efforts are well-managed and integrated. Some of the children will make a soup with their own veg, conduct an ugly veg competition and maybe even make some vegetable art.

  • When: Friday, September 21. From 10am for 4? hours
  • Where: St Sampson?s Square

?

Second course: Fish

6-Course Fish Tasting Menu

Some of Yorkshire?s top chefs get a fish slice of the action with five fish courses and a dessert which, we assume, is seafood-free. The line up:
Mal Storey of Hotel Du Vin: Stonebass with Whitby Crab and Shellfish Broth
Nick Evans of Middlethorpe Hall (pictured right): Pan fried halibut fillet Parsley root, cep, truffle, roast chicken sauce
Paul Mackie of Rudding Park: Poached Sea Trout, Samphire, Crab Beignet and Fennel Hollandaise
Lee Gardner of York Marriott: Hand Dived Scallops, Iberico Ham & Celeriac Essence

  • When: Monday, September 24, 6pm
  • Where: St Sampson?s Square

?

Third course: Meat

Tutored Tasting with Hellifield Highland Beef

Where?s the beef? Right here, at the fingertips of Robert Phillips. And after this amazing tutored tasting of mouth-watering rare-breed Yorkshire beef, you?ll banish forever the memories of chomping on ghastly gristley offcuts served at many a chain pub. Robert is from Hellifield Highland Beef where, he says, they concentrate ?on cows that are fun, sell our own beef, which we think is the best in the world, and farm in a more traditional, and environmentally friendly way?.

  • When: Thursday, September 27. From 12.30pm for an hour
  • Where: St Sampson?s Square

?

Fourth course: Cheese

Love Cheese Tasting

Grab a cracker and head for the festival because it?s British Cheese Week. Among those up for a gong is York cheesemonger Love Cheese, which could and should be named best new retailer. In this event, Julian of Love Cheese will explain the differences of the different styles ? soft, washed rind, hard, blue ? and not a Dairylea triangle in sight.

  • When: Thursday, September 7, 3.30pm
  • Where: St Sampson?s Square

?

Fifth course: Pudding

Drop-in Chocolate Workshop

Chocs away! Pop along to this workshop, in association with the York Cocoa House and indulge in making something sweet. Perfect for families, while the chocolate bar making is suitable for older children and adults
Lolly making for children of all ages

  • When: Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30, 10am-2.30pm
  • Where: St Sampson?s Square

?

Sixth course: Booze!

Champagne Warehouse present Fizz and Canap?

Venue: The Guildhall (off St Helen?s Square)
There are many wine and beer events throughout the festival. This one?s a sparkling treat presented by the Champagne Warehouse. You?re invited to taste some delicious Champagne, with diverse canap?s, nibbles and a small dessert. And why say no? Discover the difference between Champagne, Cava and Prosecco and enjoy the opportunity to match each one with various tasters.

  • When: Monday, September 24, 7.30pm-9.30pm
  • Where: The Guildhall
